Spitfire excerpt

The following are scenes from a screenplay called “Spitfire”, based on a graphic novel by Heidi Black. The story is about a former SS officer for Nazi Germany, now a Spitfire pilot for England, looking back at when things began to change, and why.
EXT. CITY-DAY

TEXT: Poland 1940

ES of a crowded street, people in tattered clothing that was once luxurious. The buildings are already in disrepair, although some look to be newer. Puddles on the street are full of dirty water, litter here and there. In the distance, fences are seen, with barbed wire jutting angrily around it. People are moving at a decent clip, none stop to look, although children are turning their heads for a glance. Hot breath can be seen in the chilled air, although not everyone looks like they are bundled up for cold weather.

WS of a girl crouched over a dead body, obviously just shot. A yellow star of David with the word Jüde on it has been sewn to both the deceased’s jacket and the jacket of the girl.

SFX indistinct German voice, the tone implying ordering the girl around.

HANNAH stands up.

CU of HANNAH’S face, cold yet not unfeeling. As she turns to look towards the camera, blood spatters become visible on the side of her face.

HANNAH
Ich verzeihe Sie. (I forgive you.)

CUT TO BLACK

SFX gun shot and body hitting the ground.

EXT. ARMY TRUCK-MORNING

WS of a transport truck full of soldiers bouncing along the road. It has been paved, but it shows signs of having been bombed at some point, large potholes in the surrounding landscape and some in the road, which have filled in with water. The soldiers are bundled up, several are smoking to try to keep warm.

HANS is asleep sitting up, his head lolling around from side to side. The truck hits a rather large pothole, almost unseating several soldiers. He jolts awake, frozen for a moment.

PAN DOWN to HANS’ hands, covered in blood. HANS looks terrified for a moment.

FRIEDRICH (O.S.)
Hans, everything alright?

MS of HANS and FRIEDRICH, looking at each other. HANS looks back at his hands.

INS/ECU of HANS’ hands. There’s no blood.

HANS
Yeah, yeah. Just tired.

BLOW OUT TO:

EXT. ARMY TRUCK-DAY
MS of HANS and ELIAS sitting on an army transport truck with a dozen other soldiers. Some of the men are laughing, but all look haggard and worn.

ELIAS
where do you think we’re going this time?

HANS
I don’t know. Gavorzyce, maybe.

FRIEDRICH
As long as we kill Jews, right?

Several soldiers on the convoy laugh and agree.

MS of HANS and ELIAS. HANS laughs along, but there is something obviously wrong with ELIAS’ smile.

EXT. FOREST-NIGHT

The sound of a hundred feet trampling across the ground can be heard in the background, along with muffled voices. HANS is leaning against a tree, and ELIAS is standing a few feet away.

ELIAS
They’re marching more than usual. Do you think they’ll all die?

HANS.
Yes. Why?

ELIAS turns away from HANS and puts his hand in one of his
pockets.

INS/CU of ELIAS’ hand as he pulls out a tattered yellow star with Jüde on it. Blood is spattered across it. It is clearly the same star that was on HANNAH.

HANS
What is that?

ELIAS turns his head slightly, looking at HANS through the corners of his eyes.

ELIAS
Nothing.

RACK FOCUS to HANS behind ELIAS, a suspicious look on HANS’ face. He pauses for a moment before shaking his head and walking away.

HANS
(pausing)
Don’t forget: they’re the enemy.

RACK FOCUS back to ELIAS. ELIAS lets out his breath, still looking at the star.

INS/CU of ELIAS running his fingers across the star.

CUT TO:

EXT. CITY-DAY

MS ZOOM TO CU of HANNAH’S face, staring straight at ELIAS, just off screen.

HANNAH
Ich verzeihe Sie.

CU of a gun, ELIAS’ face in the background.

RACK FOCUS to ELIAS’ face, cold, yet not unfeeling as it should be.

CUT TO BLACK

SFX gun shot.

CUT BACK TO SCENE

MS of ELIAS’ feet walking up to HANNAH. ELIAS crouches down into the shot and looks at HANNAH, his brow furrowed in thought.

INS/CU of the star of David on HANNAH’S coat. ELIAS’ hand enters the frame as he rips it off. He crushes it into his fist, but after a moment his hand relaxes and opens. There is blood on ELIAS’ hand from the star.
